Those competition that you have listed are very broad and require a number of different set ups and even different vehicles altogether. Check your local area for clubs and try to find one that runs competitions that you can enter. You'll find rules on how to build you vehicle and on how to conduct yourself during competitions as well on the Cross Country Drivers Association web site at http://ccda.4wd.org.au. Main thing to do is go and have a look at a couple of competitions and ask lots of questions. Most people are only too happy to give you ideas and advice on how to do things. Once you decide on what type of event you are going to compete in then build your vehicle according to the regulations of that event, and have a lot of spares(especially for a rover :finger: :D )

You have a crap load of clubs down where you are with a lot of experience. You'll find most of the QLD guys are more into short course or winch style events and the guys from NSW and Vic are more into tough truck and rock crawling events. The other states have a mix of everything.

As Crokie says, Tough Tracks Challenge is a great place to start!!

I've competed in the first two rounds, this being my first ever competition experience, and I've found it to be great. The good part is that there is more focus on competing than competition.

The more experienced competitors and officials help the less experienced, like me. Its great fun!!

The next round is at Emu Creek in September, so you've got plenty of time to get done what you need to do. Check the website for exact details http://www.toughtracks.org but as a basic guide, you need rollover protection (I've just got an internal cargo barrier kind of thingy made from 40mm tube); a battery isolator (that can be operated by official or navvy, mine and most of the others' have situated them in the grill; window net and helmet.

Check the site for class details etc., and give it a go, you won't regret it!!

just jump straight in like we did. i'd only done 1 navigation comp before last weekend. my spotter has only been in a fourby once. there's no better way to learn than to give it everything and commit!

if you eventually want to do werock - then just go straight there. don't waste time on anything less. if you want a buggy, don't build a trail rig. sounds simple because it is. carpe diem!

Slight hijack, sorry! What about in Vic? Gotta get rid of the bike, so I might as well look into competing in the Patrol instead! So where to start in Vic?

the hardest thing about competing in Vic is that you need to build the car to comply with the regs. Which alledgedly are changing, but there is no one that can tell you what if anything is changing.

Agree with NAM though. Just go and do it, worry about learning how to do it while you're competing. I think you'll find that there are many people out there willing to help you out.

hehe it was a cheap shot, I couldn't resist. I reckon they did really well, the cheer that went up when they put that beater back on its wheels using only their skinny little muscles was the biggest of the whole weekend!

anyway I won't hijack this thread any further.

It does not matter where you start it is how you drive it.

Im suprised no one has said it yet...

...The Start Line :P

But seriously a Navrun or Gymkana is the go.
But be carefull once you have been bitten by the bug you will be modifying like crazy to make it that bit better for the next comp etc etc.

Vic Drivers Nav Nights are starting up again towards the end of the year and is a fun event for all. It also needs lots of support. Awesome Local event to start on!

just remember most comps have classes, the more u modify, the higher the class, the harder the track, the bigger the damage. I personally use my patrol 4 more than comps, just like many others, and find the standard class to be very good 4 me. It allows me 2 put a total of 2" suspension, ( springs or body blocks) and run 33"s. If I then want to step up a class 2 modified, I at least know what I'm in for. At some of the comps they allow u to drive the harder track if you choose, using the same point scheme. This then makes it more challenging, without spending big dollars.:D
Pick the line and DRIVE IT !
