High mount 8274 wont work

Just purchased and older model 8274 high mount, knowingly that it didn't work, changed all 4 solenoids with new ones, checked wiring was correct, and cleaning it all up inside. Also checked wires where hand controller plugs in and they seem good.
Only thing I can think of is the hand controller is rooted. Anyone in the inner city got a 4 pin controller I can have a lend of??
It wont work at all, not a thing no clicking no in or out nothing it just
dead.
This is my first time tinkering with a winch....
I am only connecting it up to the positive terminal on the battery is this correct?
Also where the 3 wires connect to the 3 pieces of all thread at the top of the motor 2 of then are slightly loose and a little play in them could this be causing the problem?
Any help much appreciated

how have you connected the earth lead? to battery or chassis? bad earth??

I will get rid of the hand controller, defiantly wire up in cab setup
Ummm earth lead? At the moment all i have is power cable running to positive terminal on the battery?
Where do I need to run the earth from on the winch end?

if it has an earth lead run it to negative main bat.

Does not have an earth leading from the winch, where should it come from?

Should come from the solinoid box as a little black wire. I just connect it to the earth on the winch motor. If thats not earthed the solinoids wont operate.

if that is the case, and it doesn't have a threaded hole below the motor for an earth lead it is an early high-mount and earths through the winch body itself. make sure the motor cap and housing don't have corrosion on the ends as this will stop the earth going through the winch. hook up a temporary lead to one of the motor bolts on the end cap and see if that triggers her.

That must be my problem. Where exactly in the solenoid box should it come from, I don't have one at all so I need to know where it come from, my diagram dose not show it...

Someone please confirm this as my memory is a bit hazy,
But assuming you've got a 5-pin controller, the black earth wire will lead into the back of the controller cover and lead up into the remote control. That cluster of 3 wires controls you in and out feed. The other group of 2 wires makes the solinoid pack inactive if the remote controller is not plugged in.
This is a pic of underneath the solinoid pack where the remote controller plugs in - you can see the black wire.

Slunnie,
Mine has only 4 pin controller, Im assuming its a different setup.

I thought they only came in 3 and 5 pin controllers. Are you sure a black earth wire hasn't fallen out which in turn has given you a bargain.

Just try and jump start the motor direct of a batt. And bypass the controller. I cant remeber the pin combo though. But there is 3 on the motor itself.

definatly a 4 pin controller, and I cant see any black earth wire lead coming from anywhere, not even a hint where is could have broken.

Hmmm.
It may be worth using a multimeter to check the operation of the controller - especially to see what connects to what with a change in winch direction.
If its any help:
3-pin
1 - common
2 - winch in
3 - winch out
Just found my notes.... re Warn 5 pin
2pr - momentary earth
Red to chassis earth
Brown to solinoid earth
3pr - controls winch in/out
White common
Black winch out
Green winch in
I'm not wondering if it was a red wire that went to the chassis, but in that black sheath - weird to use that colour as red is usually an active wire, but then again they are using black for the winch out also.
