Gasket goo
Like most guys out there im pretty strapped for cash and it looks like my rocker cover gasket is on its way out. After pricing one up for the hefty sum of a 119 dollars i was wondering wether i could clean the old gasket up and smear a pile of gasket goo on it and if that would seal it up??
BTW its a 82 patrol sd33 diesel.

when a friend and myself pulled my engine apart and reco'd it, i had to get a new head gasket and repco (ripoffco) quoted about $100 for a new head gasket, but the local mechanic sold the correct gasket for my diesel hilux for about $40.
moral: shop around. it might be a lot cheaper elsewhere

$119 for a rocker cover gasket?? wrong and broken. if the original gasket isn't torn/broken then you should be able to reuse it, soak it in solvent/petrol to get all the oil out of it then give it a good coating of silicone type gasket poo, slap it back together and bob's yer uncle. alternatively you can buy sheets of high temp gasket paper for about $20 - $30 fron Robbos/repco etc, and cut out your own.

When I "reuse" a tappet cover gasket I only use gasket goo/silicone on the side that contacts the tappet cover. That way, if you have to take it off again, you can, without totally destroying it.
