Hi to all and Happy new year. What kind of mechanical course would be needed before heading to the real outback offroad and where to do it?

Im interested in the same sort of thing.
Am in the early stages of looking at buying some kind of 4WD but would like to know the basics of mechanics from how to tune an engine through to welding, spray painting and other kinds of body work.
I dont want to do a 3 year TAFE course - I just want to be a dodgy backyard mechanic able to work on my own mishaps
Anyone seen anything like a 12 week or less crash course ?

Most tafe run a variety of "short course" that cover the basics of welding and mechanics..

Any TAFE has mechanic short courses, do search on google. Can do panel beating too at TAFE, then can fix the dings in the panel work too!!!!

most of the things you want to do can be done in a short course...

In the City in Sydney. Ultimo is the nearest large TAFE, but Crows Nest / Mosman / Bondi etc are all close as well.
Ive done various online searches, but anything beyond learning how to change a tire seems to require that you are currently working as an apprentice and each course that seems releveant is 3 years ...
eg
http://www.sit.nsw.edu.au/
I might try and call them and see what alternatives exist.

it doesnt give you a certificate but if gives you a bit of knowledge on the subject ( i learnt alot from it)

Yep - thats my next step. Id like to work on 4x4's somewhere in the Sydney city region, but am more interested in mods than simply servicing standard vehicles.
